What is a straddle?

Understanding Straddles in ClubWPT Gold Ring Games

Straddling is usually an optional feature in poker that can add an extra layer of action to a game. While straddles are typically voluntary, they function a little differently at ClubWPT Gold. This guide will explain what a straddle is and how it works at our tables.

What is a Straddle?

A straddle is a bet placed by a player before any cards are dealt. It is an additional blind that is usually double the size of the big blind. The player who posts the straddle acts last before the flop, which can give them a strategic advantage.

  • Standard Straddle:
In most poker games, the straddle is typically placed by the player sitting to the left of the big blind (the "under the gun" position). This bet effectively raises the stakes of the game.

How Straddles Work at ClubWPT Gold

At ClubWPT Gold, we offer a unique straddle format at select Ring Game tables. Instead of being an optional bet, the straddle is mandatory and automatic for every player.

  • It's Not a Choice: At designated Straddle tables, every player who sits at the table must post the straddle bet. This ensures a consistent level of action and removes any player-to-player negotiation.

  • Doubling the Stakes: The straddle bet is always double the size of the big blind.

  • Example:

    • At a Ring Game table with blinds of 0.50/1.00 chips, a straddle table will automatically introduce a third blind.

    • The table stakes will become 0.50/1.00/2.00 chips, with the third blind being the mandatory straddle.

Why is the Straddle Mandatory?

Making the straddle mandatory at these specific tables provides a few key benefits:

  • Consistent Action: It guarantees a more action-oriented game, as the stakes are higher from the very beginning of the hand.

  • Fairness: By being mandatory for every player, it removes the strategic element of when or if to straddle, ensuring that all players at the table are subject to the same rules.

If you enjoy a more aggressive and fast-paced game, our straddle tables are a great option for you. Simply look for the Straddle tables in the Ring Game lobby. As always, if you have any questions, our Customer Support team is here to help.
